Innovation in STEM

Brief description of business:

Afon Technology is a medical device business on a mission to develop Glucowear™, a completely non-invasive, continuous blood glucose monitor. Glucowear™ will empower diabetics with the information they need to better manage their condition on a daily basis.

Why they deserved to win their category:

Afon Technology has been recognised for its innovation in tackling the huge challenge of non-invasive continuous blood glucose monitoring for those living with diabetes. The medical device Glucowear® has persevered through many technical and regulatory challenges which will mean diabetics will be able to better manage their condition on a daily basis.

Privately funded, Afon Technology, has been able to develop this ground-breaking technology, where global incumbents with much larger resources have failed to do so.

With a team of just 10 employees and a small number of contractors, Afon Technology is making a splash in the world of diabetes technology and is working hard to be the first to bring to market a non-invasive glucose monitoring solution to those living with diabetes.

How does the individual, business or organisation further the STEM sector in Wales?

The multi-skilled team at Afon Technology are taking the lead in developing ground-breaking technology which will change the management of diabetes care turning any smart watch into a glucose monitor.

Its needle free technology will give accurate and real time results all day, every day, without the need for daily finger-pricking there removing a huge degree of pain as well as hassle from the lives of people with diabetes.

Creating STEM jobs for people living in Wales, using local suppliers and running its clinical trials in Welsh facilities gives employees both internal and prospective employees the support and training to better themselves and succeed in their chosen paths. Its dedication to placing students on internships and training courses in also helping the STEM sector in Wales to flourish.

Afon are determined to put Wales on the map when it comes to diabetes technology and to be able to say that “the world’s first non-invasive glucose monitor was developed in Wales” would be a very proud moment.
